House height
Traditionally, the overall height of a house is determined by measuring from the top of the finished floor on the main level, to the highest peak of the roof.

Ceiling heights Raising or lowering the height of the ceilings on one or more floors of a house is often a simple change that can be made by your builder. However, if you want to raise the ceiling of the main floor of a two-story home, there has to be room to add steps to the existing staircase. |

Main level | 8 |
Vaulted ceilings
We consider a room to be vaulted if the ceiling - whether flat, angled, or curved - is above 10 feet at its highest point. If you prefer that one or more rooms not be vaulted in your new home, this is a very simple change that your builder can make for you.

Upon entering the home, you find yourself in a foyer which brings you to an open living space with vaulted ceilings and exposed wood beams. A long clerestory window raises the ceiling even higher, bringing in natural light from above, and providing venting windows for cooling. From the living spaces there are views to a stairwell and to a balcony above, and a glimpse of the upper loft. The living room has a wood stove on a stone hearth to heat the home during cooler seasons, and a powder room is located next to the stairwell. The kitchen has skylights above for additional natural light, and a center island that separates it from the open living and dining areas. A door from the living room opens into the master suite, which has a vaulted ceiling as well. The master bedroom has sliding glass doors that open onto a rear terrace, which also can be accessed from the living room. The master bath/dressing area has a vaulted ceiling with a skylight, and features two closets, a vanity with two sinks, and a whirlpool tub that sits below a window. A separate room next to it accommodates a toilet and a shower.
The upper loft was used as a study loft, and is open to the living space below. The windows at either end of the room provide outdoor views, and additional sunlight.
The lower level has a cozy family room that has sliding glass doors to a rear patio, and a separate room for a den. On this level, there are two more bedrooms, a full bath, a large pantry, and a laundry/utility room.

Brief Description
This home was originally built as a passive solar home on a sloped lot, with views to the mountains and a lake. The home was designed with a south facing facade for good solar heating in the winter, and is designed with natural cooling elements for the warmer seasons. The vaulted ceiling in the living room provides a dramatic space, and high windows for good natural ventilation.
