Ceiling heights Raising or lowering the height of the ceilings on one or more floors of a house is often a simple change that can be made by your builder. However, if you want to raise the ceiling of the main floor of a two-story home, there has to be room to add steps to the existing staircase. |

Vaulted ceilings
We consider a room to be vaulted if the ceiling - whether flat, angled, or curved - is above 10 feet at its highest point. If you prefer that one or more rooms not be vaulted in your new home, this is a very simple change that your builder can make for you.

This handsome Craftsman–style home was originally built within a meadow of pine trees, so it was designed to reflect the natural beauty that surrounds it. The rooflines are accented with wood beam and knee brace details, and the exterior facade is composed of board and batten siding, cultured stone veneer, and multi–paned windows. This clean, natural aesthetic is reflected in the interior spaces as well.
The covered entry has a vaulted roof with a decorative wood post and beam system that is supported by two stone pillars. Upon entering the house, a short hallway on your left leads to two full bedroom suites (including the master), a short hallway on your right leads past the kitchen and a mudroom/laundry that accesses the 3–car garage on the way to the stairs to the upper level, and straight ahead is the great room. The ceiling in the great room soars to 24' in the middle of the room. It features a dramatic fireplace flanked by built–in cabinets, clerestory windows that help flood the house with natural light, and sliding glass doors that lead outside to a partially enclosed terrace.
The great room is open to both the kitchen and the dining area. The ceilings in this part of the house are set at 9'6". A breakfast bar separates the kitchen from the great room, and sliding glass doors open the dining area to a covered outdoor patio and a deck with a whirlpool The dining area is surrounded by windows on three sides, providing abundant views and sunlight. The spacious kitchen features a large center island with a prep sink, lots of counter space and cabinets, and a walk–in pantry. The garage has a storage/mechanical room, and a separate area for trash. A cupola at the roof provides visual interest at the exterior and a visual transition from the higher roofs to the lower garage roof.
On the other side of the house there are two complete bedroom suites. The master bedroom features a walk–in closet, a gas corner fireplace, and sliding glass doors to the rear terrace and yard. The master bath has a vanity with two sinks, a linen cabinet, a soaking tub that sits under a window, a separate shower, and a private toilet. A large walk–in closet is opposite the bath area. Bedroom 2 is at the front of the house. It has windows on two walls – one of which is a bumped–out bay – along with a full bathroom and a walk–in closet.
After coming upstairs, the landing opens up to a desk/sitting space with windows that look out to the front. A secondary door to bedroom 4's full bath is located next to the stairway. Bedroom 4 also has its own dressing area with a separate vanity and sink. The room next to bedroom 4 would make an ideal office or playroom, and sliding glass doors lead to an exterior deck.
As you walk across the bridge to the wing on the other side, there are windows along the length of the bridge that provide sunlight and views to the front yard. There are also views to the rear through the clerestory windows in the great room, and down to the great room itself. At the end of the bridge, a pair of doors opens into a private bedroom suite that has a vaulted ceiling, a bay window to the rear, a walk–in closet, and a full bath with a private toilet room.
This classic Craftsman home features beautiful wood detailing on the exterior that continues as you enter the house. It has an enclosed courtyard at the front, and both a patio and a covered porch at the rear. The ceiling in the great room soars to a stunning 24' in the middle, with a rear wall that has tall windows filling it with transoms above. Clerestory windows front and back on the upper level lets even more light into the house. Windows wrap around the dining room as well, providing a 180–degree view. The master suite and bedroom suite 2 are on the main level, and upstairs there are two additional bedroom suites along with a room that can be used for work or play.
We highly recommend that you click on two boxes – the number of bedrooms you know you need, and one less bedroom. For example, if you need 4 bedrooms, click on the boxes next to 4 and next to 3. Otherwise you will not see homes where existing rooms on the lower, main, or upper levels might work perfectly well as a bedroom instead of as an office, study, etc.
