Ceiling heights Raising or lowering the height of the ceilings on one or more floors of a house is often a simple change that can be made by your builder. However, if you want to raise the ceiling of the main floor of a two-story home, there has to be room to add steps to the existing staircase. |

Main level | 10 |
Vaulted ceilings
We consider a room to be vaulted if the ceiling - whether flat, angled, or curved - is above 10 feet at its highest point. If you prefer that one or more rooms not be vaulted in your new home, this is a very simple change that your builder can make for you.

This unique home is characterized by its dramatic cathedral ceiling, which is expressed in both the interior and exterior of the house. The stone veneer grounds the building to the earth, while the two–story high walls of glass doors and windows rise to the sky. The result is a striking home from the inside out.
This home was originally built on a sloped lot, with the lower level that opens to a large curved patio beneath the deck at the front of the home. The entry steps flare out to invite you up to the main (upper) floor. To the left of the entry foyer is a magnificent great room space that is sunken down two steps, with exposed trusses holding up the vaulted ceiling. Two–story high glass walls are angled at 90 degrees, to bring in multiple outdoor views and sunshine, with glass doors opening onto a large curved deck. An impressive stone fireplace is on one wall, and is one of the many stone features found throughout the house. Opposite of the great room is an open stairwell, and windows that look out to the rear patio space.
To the right of the foyer is a large open kitchen that looks out to a breakfast nook and a hearth area. A center island provides additional working space, and the open counter has a raised portion for eating. The hearth area has sliding glass doors to the rear patio, and a see–through fireplace set in a stone veneer wall separates it from the formal dining room. The rear patio is curved, mimicking the front deck, and the outdoor fireplace makes it ideal for entertaining. The kitchen features an angled counter with a prep sink, a desk, and a walk–in pantry. An opening from the kitchen leads to a laundry room and a four–car garage.
Beyond the great room are a bedroom suite with a full bath and walk–in closet, a powder room, a study, an elevator to the lower level, and the master suite. The master bedroom has a sitting nook with a fireplace, and sliding glass doors that open onto a private veranda. The luxurious master bath has two walk–in closets, a private toilet room, a shower, and a tub. The tub sits below a barrel–vaulted ceiling, is surrounded by windows, and even has its own fireplace!
On the lower level, there is an open billiards/recreation room with curved windows looking out to the front covered patio. Stone columns at the patio hold up the deck above, and have arched openings between them. A see–through fireplace, set in a stone veneer wall, separates the billiards room from the gaming room. The gaming room has a large bar space, and has doors that open into a wine cellar. From the gaming room you can access a home theater, a powder room, and a large storage room. In the other wing, there are two more bedroom suites, each with its own full bath, an exercise room, and more storage space.
This is a truly unique house, both inside and out. Like the prow of a large ship, the angled walls of the great room project from the front of the house. In addition to amazing views provided by the soaring windows, this room has a magnificent ceiling crossed by exposed wood trusses. The house is separated into two wings, with the master suite on one side and the living spaces on the other. There's a round deck at the front, and a round patio space with a fireplace at the rear.
We highly recommend that you click on two boxes – the number of bedrooms you know you need, and one less bedroom. For example, if you need 4 bedrooms, click on the boxes next to 4 and next to 3. Otherwise you will not see homes where existing rooms on the lower, main, or upper levels might work perfectly well as a bedroom instead of as an office, study, etc.
