House height
Traditionally, the overall height of a house is determined by measuring from the top of the finished floor on the main level, to the highest peak of the roof.

Ceiling heights Raising or lowering the height of the ceilings on one or more floors of a house is often a simple change that can be made by your builder. However, if you want to raise the ceiling of the main floor of a two-story home, there has to be room to add steps to the existing staircase. |

Main level | 10 |
Upper level | 9 |
Vaulted ceilings
We consider a room to be vaulted if the ceiling - whether flat, angled, or curved - is above 10 feet at its highest point. If you prefer that one or more rooms not be vaulted in your new home, this is a very simple change that your builder can make for you.

This beautiful home is reminiscent of an Italian villa, from the exterior finishes of stucco and stone, along with the tall narrow windows and gently sloped rooflines, to the arched openings of the rear loggia and the interior gallery. It features a circular stair tower that rises above the rest of the home, and a spacious living area with a vaulted ceiling and exposed wood trusses.
After walking through the arched, covered entryway, you find yourself in an open outdoor courtyard space, which creates a pleasant transition before entering the house. The courtyard features an outdoor hearth, which is not only a nice visual element, but makes the space usable in cooler weather. The front door opens into an impressive foyer, which is a rotunda space with a curved stairwell that has a ceiling height that reaches over 23′! Windows along the two–story high space bring sunlight into the stairwell as well as the foyer. A door off of the foyer opens into a study, which has sliding glass doors that open onto the front courtyard. This room with its exterior entry might be the perfect place for a home office. Another opening from the foyer leads to a vestibule that accesses a powder room, a coat closet, and the master suite.
The master bedroom has a cozy sitting area that protrudes from the bedroom, creating a space with three walls of windows. The sitting area has a center fireplace, and a ceiling that rises to 14′. The luxurious master bathtub sits under a large window, and it is framed by a pair of fir columns. The bathroom also features a private toilet, a large separate shower, two separate vanity sinks, and a small counter with an under counter refrigerator. A door from the bath opens into a spacious walk–in closet that is divided into two sections, and has room for a stacking washer/dryer for extra convenience.
From the foyer, a stone arch leads to a long gallery space with arched openings that look into a ‘great hall’, which is essentially a large open living space. The room is vaulted and has exposed wood trusses at the ceiling, with sliding glass doors along the back wall to bring in natural light and outdoor views. An exterior loggia spans the length of the great hall, and has arched openings that look out to the patio space beyond. At one end of the great room there is a centrally–located fireplace, and at the other end there is an open kitchen. The spacious gourmet kitchen has a center island with an extended counter for eating, and a large walk–in pantry. A counter with an under counter refrigerator is located at the end of the gallery, in between the formal dining room and the kitchen. The dining room also has sliding glass doors that access the courtyard. From the kitchen, a rear hallway leads to an office nook, a secondary stairwell, a powder room, and a mudroom. The mudroom has plenty of space for a bench and built–ins, and accesses the two separate two–car garages.
The upper level is divided into two separate wings. The curved stairwell tower leads to a loft and a private guest room suite/studio, which would make an ideal in–law unit or nanny’s quarters. It has its own full bath, a walk–in closet, and a small private outdoor balcony. The right wing of the upper level is accessed by the secondary stairwell, and has two bedroom suites. Each bedroom has its own private full bath and walk–in closet. The larger bedroom also has a private outdoor balcony.
The basement level – should you choose to build it – can be accessed by both stairwells. It has two large multi–use rooms, which were used as a billiards room and a media area by the original homeowner. The billiards room has a full curved wet bar with a door to a wine cellar. Arched openings divide the billiards room from the media area, which has a fireplace in one corner, built–ins for media in another corner, a powder room, and access to the wine cellar. A smaller area next to the media room accesses the secondary stairwell, and can be used as a reading/play room or office area. On the other side of the billiards room there are two additional guest rooms, and a full bath that divides the two rooms. Each bedroom has its own private vanity sink area that connects to the adjoining shared bath.

Brief Description
This luxury home mirrors the style of a villa built in Tuscany. The stucco exterior is punctuated by stone veneer, most noticeably surrounding a round element with a low–pitch hipped roof. As you step through an entrance tower you enter a large enclosed courtyard space with a fireplace. The round foyer has a vaulted ceiling, and a round staircase that rises to the upper level. Interior and exterior loggias flank the great hall, which features a vaulted ceiling with exposed beams and a wide view to the rear. The circular stairs lead to a private guest suite, while stairs on the opposite side of the house bring you to two additional bedrooms.
