House height
Traditionally, the overall height of a house is determined by measuring from the top of the finished floor on the main level, to the highest peak of the roof.

Ceiling heights Raising or lowering the height of the ceilings on one or more floors of a house is often a simple change that can be made by your builder. However, if you want to raise the ceiling of the main floor of a two-story home, there has to be room to add steps to the existing staircase. |

Main level | 10 |
Upper level | 9 |
Vaulted ceilings
We consider a room to be vaulted if the ceiling - whether flat, angled, or curved - is above 10 feet at its highest point. If you prefer that one or more rooms not be vaulted in your new home, this is a very simple change that your builder can make for you.

This cozy home has an entry porch that wraps around one corner, and a screened porch at the rear – ideal for those who enjoy outdoor living. Wood siding graces the exterior, which also features elegant wood columns, and wood shutters at the windows. These plans include drawings for a detached single–car garage.
The front porch wraps around the left corner – made wider and deeper at the corner itself – providing additional outdoor living space and views. After entering the house, there's a short hallway on the right leading to the stairs, a bedroom, and a full bath. On the left, there's an office space that can be sealed off from the house by closing a pair of sliding doors. This room can be accessed from the wrap around front porch, making it a perfect home office that has visiting clients.
The living areas at the rear are all open to each other, allowing a flexible floor layout. The central great room has windows along the rear wall, and a portion of the back wall opens up to a vaulted ceiling, creating a natural sunroom. A door from this vaulted space – which is right next to the kitchen – opens onto a screened porch that also accesses the back yard. A pair of structural columns delineates the great room space from the dining room, which also has a pair of doors that walk out to the entry porch. The kitchen features a unique curved bay window that looks out to the screened porch, with a center pair of windows that open up for ventilation. A counter with a sink faces the great room, and a center island provides additional workspace. An opening from the kitchen leads to a mudroom that has room for a pantry and a second refrigerator (or freezer). A door in the mudroom accesses the side porch. The main level has 10' ceilings throughout.
The stairs to the upper level lead to a loft that wraps around the stairs, leading to a lovely sitting room with a railing that looks down to a portion of the great room below. The master bedroom features two separate walk–in closets, and the master bath includes a room with a large tub and two vanity sinks, and a door to a separate room with a toilet and a shower. There is another bedroom on this floor, with a walk–in closet and a full bath, and both a hobby room and a conveniently located laundry room.
An attic space above provides additional storage space if needed.
