House height
Traditionally, the overall height of a house is determined by measuring from the top of the finished floor on the main level, to the highest peak of the roof.

Ceiling heights Raising or lowering the height of the ceilings on one or more floors of a house is often a simple change that can be made by your builder. However, if you want to raise the ceiling of the main floor of a two-story home, there has to be room to add steps to the existing staircase. |

Main level | 10 |
Upper level | 9 |
Vaulted ceilings
We consider a room to be vaulted if the ceiling - whether flat, angled, or curved - is above 10 feet at its highest point. If you prefer that one or more rooms not be vaulted in your new home, this is a very simple change that your builder can make for you.

After coming off of the covered entry, you enter a foyer space that looks up to the balcony above. A powder room, stairwell, and coat closet are to the left, and to the right is a formal dining room with windows that look out to the side breezeway. Straight ahead is an open family room with a large central fireplace, which is flanked by built–ins on either side. At the rear, a door opens onto a screened porch, which can also be seen through a wall of windows. The family room is open to the kitchen, which has a large center island with a sink, and a breakfast nook for eating. The kitchen has a small hall with a walk–in pantry, which leads to the formal dining room. From the kitchen, one door opening leads to a guest suite with a full bath, and another leads to a mudroom. The mudroom accesses the two–car garage, and the side breezeway that leads to another single–car garage.
The upper floor is divided into three wings. One wing is devoted to the master bedroom suite, which has windows facing the rear, and has room for a sitting area. The huge walk–in closet accommodates ‘his’ and ‘her’ closets, and the master bath has room for both a whirlpool tub and a shower. The private toilet room has access to the attic for extra storage space. The second wing has a laundry room, and two more bedrooms. The bedrooms share a full bath, and they each have a walk–in closet. The smaller third wing is devoted to a large game room, which also accesses the attic for extra storage.

Brief Description
The brick veneer, horizontal siding, and cedar shingles suggested for the exterior of this home are complemented by wood trim boards, shutters, and corbels. The front entry is distinguished by an arched brick opening, under a curved roof. The kitchen is open to a sunny breakfast nook and next to a formal dining room; the family room has a fireplace that can be enjoyed from the kitchen and a glazed door that opens to a screened porch at the rear of the house; and there's a study with a view that could easily be used as an office, or as a guest room since it's next to a full bath. The master suite is upstairs, along with two additional bedrooms, a large game room, and a laundry.
