Traditionally, the overall height of a house is determined by measuring from the top of the finished floor on the main level, to the highest peak of the roof.

Ceiling heights Raising or lowering the height of the ceilings on one or more floors of a house is often a simple change that can be made by your builder. However, if you want to raise the ceiling of the main floor of a two-story home, there has to be room to add steps to the existing staircase. |

Vaulted ceilings
We consider a room to be vaulted if the ceiling - whether flat, angled, or curved - is above 10 feet at its highest point. If you prefer that one or more rooms not be vaulted in your new home, this is a very simple change that your builder can make for you.

At the entry foyer, a stairway at the left goes down to the optional basement and up to the optional loft space. At the right are a bedroom, a full bath, and a coat closet. As you continue through the entry hall, you pass the master bedroom with its own private bathroom and large closet. The vaulted ceiling in the master bedroom gives it a feeling of spaciousness, and the master bath features curved bay windows. A laundry room sits off the hallway, and has room for a freezer or a second refrigerator. Down the hall is the den, which may be used as a bedroom if you prefer, and the public living spaces. The kitchen, dining room and living room are all open to the vaulted ceiling above, which is accented by the wood posts and beams. The living and dining room floor level is set down a couple of steps, making the room feel even more spacious and airy. Light pours in from the windows around the room and above, where it is open to the windows at the loft level, and the roof skylights. On one side of the living room is the fireplace, and on the other side are doors that lead to the exterior deck.
The optional loft can be used as an office, a guest room, or for storage.

Brief Description
Light pours into every corner of this Southwest inspired 2 to 3 bedroom home. The design is low and ground–hugging, and is available with either a 14–foot vaulted ceiling or a bonus loft space that could accommodate a den or additional bedroom. An 8' wide verandah greatly extends the living/dining area.
