House height
Traditionally, the overall height of a house is determined by measuring from the top of the finished floor on the main level, to the highest peak of the roof.

Ceiling heights Raising or lowering the height of the ceilings on one or more floors of a house is often a simple change that can be made by your builder. However, if you want to raise the ceiling of the main floor of a two-story home, there has to be room to add steps to the existing staircase. |

Main level | 8 |
Upper level | 8.5 |
Vaulted ceilings
We consider a room to be vaulted if the ceiling - whether flat, angled, or curved - is above 10 feet at its highest point. If you prefer that one or more rooms not be vaulted in your new home, this is a very simple change that your builder can make for you.

This design has been published in numerous journals, including the Summer 2001 issue of “Fine Homebuilding”, Annual Issue on Houses, and the Jan./Feb. 2002 issue of “Solar Today”. Originally designed for a neighborhood in Martha’s Vineyard, Island CoHousing provides variations of a basic two–bedroom home, with options that include a third bedroom and a fourth bedroom, which range from 1,094 to 1,788 square feet.
As you come off the covered entry porch, you enter a foyer with a stairwell straight ahead. The basic plan has an open kitchen and living room, with a door to a storage/laundry room. The laundry room can also be modified to be a bathroom. Upstairs there are two bedrooms and a full bath. Option B has the house extended next to the foyer, which creates a dining area space, and has a full bath instead of a laundry room. The dining area provides an alcove space upstairs, which may be used as a reading nook or office space. Option C has the house extended at the rear to create a third bedroom. Upstairs, you may build a fourth bedroom above the third bedroom, which results in Option D. And Option E extends the living area and the third bedroom.
In the original design, a neighborhood of sixteen homes was built from variations of the basic plan. Whether you are a developer/builder, or interested in building your own home, the different plan options allow for customizations, and provide flexibility for future expansions.

Brief Description
This small cottage was designed to be one of a number of getaway homes in Martha's Vineyard. The drawings include a number of options for both the lower and upper levels. In the smallest version there's an open kitchen and living space on the main level and two bedrooms on the upper. Two slightly larger versions add a dining room and a third bedroom on the main level, but the house outline is different. And the upstairs of these two versions includes a fourth bedroom.
