House height
Traditionally, the overall height of a house is determined by measuring from the top of the finished floor on the main level, to the highest peak of the roof.

Ceiling heights Raising or lowering the height of the ceilings on one or more floors of a house is often a simple change that can be made by your builder. However, if you want to raise the ceiling of the main floor of a two-story home, there has to be room to add steps to the existing staircase. |

Main level | 9 |
Upper level | 9 |
Vaulted ceilings
We consider a room to be vaulted if the ceiling - whether flat, angled, or curved - is above 10 feet at its highest point. If you prefer that one or more rooms not be vaulted in your new home, this is a very simple change that your builder can make for you.

An awning located over the two wooden garage doors adds some weather protection as well as some visual interest to the front facade. The left garage bay has a door that opens into a vestibule that leads to either the exterior or to the upper apartment. The right bay has a side door that accesses the outside, and another door that opens into the bedroom suite. (It would be quite easy to have your builder add a door between the two garage bays if desired.) The bedroom on the main level has a full bath, windows along two walls, and a door that opens out to the rear patio.
You can access the upper apartment either through the garage or by an exterior staircase. After going up the stairs, you walk into an open living area with a ceiling that vaults from 9' to over 16'! Windows are located on three walls to fill the room with natural light, and double French doors look and open out to a covered porch space. A dining area is located in one corner by the staircase, and a breakfast bar separates the living room from the kitchen. As you walk towards the master bedroom, you pass a pantry closet that's located next to the kitchen. The master bedroom has a 9' ceiling (like the kitchen), and features a full bath with room for a stacking washer/dryer and a door that accesses a walk–in closet.

Brief Description
This charming detached garage features 2 completely separate parking areas – one with access to a bedroom suite on the main level, and another with access to a full one–bedroom apartment on the upper level. The exterior windows are graced with operable wood shutters, and the rear of the house is just as charming as the front, with a covered patio accented with large round columns and a covered porch located above it. It could be added as an accessory building to an existing residence, but with its comfortable living spaces and attractive exterior, it could just as well be built as a vacation home.
