House height
Traditionally, the overall height of a house is determined by measuring from the top of the finished floor on the main level, to the highest peak of the roof.

Ceiling heights Raising or lowering the height of the ceilings on one or more floors of a house is often a simple change that can be made by your builder. However, if you want to raise the ceiling of the main floor of a two-story home, there has to be room to add steps to the existing staircase. |

Main level | 10 |
Vaulted ceilings
We consider a room to be vaulted if the ceiling - whether flat, angled, or curved - is above 10 feet at its highest point. If you prefer that one or more rooms not be vaulted in your new home, this is a very simple change that your builder can make for you.

As you approach this house you pass through a covered gateway with short walls on either side, entering a courtyard large enough for a garden or patio furniture. The front door opens to stunning views, enhanced by lower and upper windows at the far end of the great room. A coat closet is conveniently located next to the entryway.
The open kitchen is just to the left as you enter the main living area. It features a large center island with a range on top and a rounded out edge for casual eating or serving. The sink is centered beneath a pair of windows, overlooking the front courtyard. The ceiling is set at 9′ at this outer wall, rising dramatically to just over 20′ at the transition to the great room and dining area. Two skylights in this sloping ceiling are positioned directly above the island. Two doors at the corner of the kitchen open to a walk–in pantry and a laundry room, with a door leading to the garage.
The great room and dining area maintain the 20′ height along a center ridgeline running front–to–back, descending to 13′ on either side. A fireplace on one wall is flanked by built–in cabinets or shelving, which can be enjoyed from every part of the great room. The rear wall is slightly curved, and nearly entirely filled with glass! Five tall picture windows are flanked by glass doors, and topped by a trio of windows that reach almost to the ridgeline.
A short hall just off the entryway leads to the master suite and a den/study. The master bedroom has a ceiling that rises from 9’6″ at the walls to just over 14′ down the center. As you enter the room, there are built–in shelves on either side. Another fireplace flanked by built–ins faces the bed, and a pair of glazed doors flanked by windows open to a rear yard or patio. The master bath has a large soaking tub beneath a pair of windows, a large shower with a drying area, two sinks, a private toilet, and a walk–in closet. A pair of skylights in the ceiling fill the entire bath with natural light.
A short hall on the other side of the house passes a powder room before reaching two additional bedrooms. The vestibule that accesses the rooms has a skylight in the ceiling and an extra closet. Each room has a full bath – one with a tub and one with a shower – and lots of windows for light and views. They also feature lofty 10′ ceilings.
