House height
Traditionally, the overall height of a house is determined by measuring from the top of the finished floor on the main level, to the highest peak of the roof.

Ceiling heights Raising or lowering the height of the ceilings on one or more floors of a house is often a simple change that can be made by your builder. However, if you want to raise the ceiling of the main floor of a two-story home, there has to be room to add steps to the existing staircase. |

Main level | 9 |
Upper level | 8 |
Vaulted ceilings
We consider a room to be vaulted if the ceiling - whether flat, angled, or curved - is above 10 feet at its highest point. If you prefer that one or more rooms not be vaulted in your new home, this is a very simple change that your builder can make for you.

Abundant windows throughout fill this home with sunlight and provide views to the outside. Open wood beams at the ceilings, tray ceilings, wood columns, and arched openings, are only some of the details that contribute to the appeal of this well designed home. This house can be easily modified to include a full in–law unit on the main floor. If this is of interest to you, please read the section near the end of this Description titled In–Law Unit.
After entering the two–story foyer space, a pair of wood columns frame the opening to the formal dining room on your right. The dining room space has a wood box beam ceiling, complementing the wood columns and wood floor. The stairs to the upper and lower floors are on your left. And straight ahead is an open great room, with windows along the rear wall which reach the two story–high ceiling. The great room has a stone fireplace hearth with space for media on one side of it, and it is open to the breakfast nook/kitchen area and the dining room. A door leads to the covered porch at the rear, a perfect space to sit and relax during warmer weather. The large U–shaped kitchen features a center island with a prep sink, and a butler’s service room that separates the kitchen from the dining room. The butler’s room provides a second prep sink, an under counter refrigerator, and additional counter space and cabinets. From the kitchen, a mudroom leads to a walk–in pantry, a laundry room, and a three–car garage. On the other side of the foyer are a closet, a powder room, a study/guestroom, and a master bedroom suite. The master bedroom has a tray ceiling, a bay window with a window seat, and a pair of sliding glass doors that accesses the covered porch at the rear. The master bath has a private toilet room, a whirlpool tub and a separate shower, and a door to a large walk–in closet.
A large picture window located at the stair landing lights up the open stairwell to the upstairs. The upstairs balcony looks down to both the great room and the entry foyer, and opens up to a loft space with windows looking out to the front. Past it is a private guest room with a full bath and a walk–in closet, and a mechanical closet. On the other side of the house, there are two more bedrooms, each with its own private full bath and walk–in closet.
In–Law Unit
Convert the Master bedroom, bath, and closet areas to an in–law unit (including the Study, if you need more space), and then turn the space occupied by Bedrooms 2 and 3 and their bathrooms into a Master Suite.
