Traditionally, the overall height of a house is determined by measuring from the top of the finished floor on the main level, to the highest peak of the roof.
Raising or lowering the height of the ceilings on one or more floors of a house is often a simple change that can be made by your builder. However, if you want to raise the ceiling of the main floor of a two-story home, there has to be room to add steps to the existing staircase.
We consider a room to be vaulted if the ceiling - whether flat, angled, or curved - is above 10 feet at its highest point. If you prefer that one or more rooms not be vaulted in your new home, this is a very simple change that your builder can make for you.

The front of the garage has upper windows over a small awning that's located over the two wooden garage doors, which provides some weather protection while adding visual interest to the front. You walk to the rear to access the exterior staircase to the upper floor, which provides a bit of privacy, but it would be just as easy to modify the layout so you access the stairs from the front if desired.
The upper bonus room has a ceiling that slopes up to a 9' flat ceiling and has an open layout. There is a full bath and a closet, so it would make an ideal guest suite, and if you add a kitchenette it could be used as a studio apartment.

Though this garage was not built with the original Carolina Craftsman home, it's considered the best match by the architect to accompany the house. Like the home, this two–car garage plan has universal appeal in its straightforward design and simple plan, and it includes a bonus room on the upper level.
